There are many books and magazines out there, both in print and online, that feature Jeanette.  Here are a few that I have found while searching to add to my collection.  I have chosen to list all despite that many come under despite.   Some reference a romance that some fans don't believe to be true, and others are bias against Nelson Eddy who whether you believed the romance or not played a significant role in Jeanette's life.  However, I am still going to list them all.  It is up to you to decide what you want to believe.

 

I have divided into sections.  Biographies, Other reference material, Filmographies and Sharon Rich’s collection of biographies.  These are all sold online.  Magazines are probably available in back issue if you know the issue number you wish to purchase at the magazine’s website.  Online sources are from webzines or online versions of print material.  General Articles would be listed in my links or Press clippings page.

 

I don't sell anything though this website.  If you wish to purchase any of these books you could probably find them on Amazon or Barnes and Nobles.  Some are out of print or are available on an alternative site and I shall label those as such.  If the book is out of print, many of the online book sellers have out of print sections and used book sells.  There is also Ebay and Half.com if you want to venture there.

Biographies

Hollywood Diva:  A Biography of Jeanette MacDonald by Edward B. Turk
This is a biography of Jeanette, with Gene as one of the leading sources of information.  It was published last in 2000.  However some consider this to be bias against Nelson Eddy.

The Jeanette MacDonald Story by James Parish
Another biography about Jeanette.  However, like Turks has been considered bias against Nelson.  This may have affected the writing.

Filmographies

The Films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy by Eleanor Knowles-Dugan
This is a filmography of Jeanette and Nelson, full of pictures and information about their films together and apart.  Recently refurbished and republished in 2007.    It has an accompanying website.

The Complete Films of Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy by Phillip Castanza
This is a filmography book; less detailed then Ms. Knowles-Dugan but full of photographs and cast lists.   Unfortunately this is out of print, so you would have to search out-of-print book stories and websites and used sellers.

Jeanette MacDonald by Lee Edward Stern
This is part of a series on the history of movies.  Mostly pictures, some text.

Online Material

Arabella & CO: America's Singing Sweethearts (Internet Edition 1: June/July 2001) Written by Dorothy K. Jadlowiec.
This is the premier article of the Arabella & Co Web magazine and it focuses on Nelson Eddy and Jeanette.    It has various screen caps and a biography of the pair.

Arabella & CO: The Baritone's Corner (Assorted Editions from June/July 2001 onward) Written by Dorothy K. Jadlowiec
The Baritone’s Corner is a regular article in the magazine, focusing on Nelson Eddy.  And since Nelson did a lot of work with Jeanette, you’ll find her there in various articles through out.  Includes information, pictures, slideshows and song clips.

Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy Paper Dolls in Full Color by Tom Tierney
Paper Dolls!  I used to love playing with paper dolls, but this is also a good source for costuming if one need it.
  
Farewell to Dreams by Diane Goodrich and Sharon Rich (although now listed as only Diane Goodrich)
This is a fictionalized version of Sweethearts, and a little more risqué.  More of a romance novel then an actual biography.  Unlike Sweethearts it does not seem to have the factual evidence added and it has parts dramatized.  So it’s a interesting book to have in your collection but not something I’d use as a source.  If you want a source for the romance I suggest Sweethearts by Sharon Rich.  Much more factually based.   This is out of print and appears to be getting high prices for copies of it.

The Jeanette MacDonald Autobiography: The Lost Manuscript by Sharon Rich
This is another book put out by Ms. Rich.  Essentially it is written by Jeanette, but has been annotated and expanded by Ms. Rich.

Sweethearts by Sharon Rich
This biography is of the controversial romance between Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald.  Some consider it to be quite factual; others consider it to be rumors published.

Jeanette MacDonald: The Irving Stone Letters by Sharon Rich
This is a collection of letters Jeanette wrote to Irving Stone, a friend of hers while she was on Broadway, about her life in Hollywood.  It covers a decade of her life from 1927 to 1938.  It is put together by Sharon Rich, but the writing is Jeanette’s.  An interesting look at her life that she didn’t share with the media but with close friends.

The Rosary: New Introduction by Sharon Rich, comments by Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy by Florence Barclay, Jeanette MacDonald, Nelson Eddy, and Sharon Rich
This is a novel by Florence Barclay written in 1910, but it has the annotations by Jeanette and Nelson as it was considered a possible film idea for the duo.  The introduction is by Sharon Rich.

Jeanette MacDonald:  A Pictorial Treasury by Sharon Rich
A collection of pictures of Jeanette.

MacEddy Magazines. Organized by Sharon Rich and the MacEddy Club
This is a club magazine, sent out to all club members containing articles and pictures of the duo. There are some copies of the past issues for sell at the Maceddy website.
